A learning community empowering digital witnesses of Oklahoma oral history

Guidelines for using this social networking site:

Student Members:
All members under the age of 18 will be categorized as students and should use a computer generated avatar as their member image. We strongly encourage students remove their date of birth and location from their profile. This can be accomplished by going to the My Settings link on the site. Please make sure you have parental permission to join this social networking site.

All Members:
Blog postings, submitted videos and all content should be related to digital storytelling. Please keep your dialog and discussion appropriate for all audience members. We encourage everyone to join ALL appropriate learning communities realted to your profile. This can be accomplished using the icons on the right hand side of the site.
Thank you for participating.

Dawn: Thanks for posting these guidelines. Everyone needs to be aware that this online learning community is a PUBLIC website, and everyone's comments and contributions are being seen by lots of people. "The eyes of Oklahoma (and people in other places) are upon us!" This means we all need to help review and police our website.

Dawn, Kamala and I brainstormed these guidelines together and thought we should share them because we are starting to have some student as well as educator participants here in our learning community. This is GREAT, and we are enthused to have students directly participating, but we want to make sure everyone is safe and appropriate. If you're under 18, using an avatar (computer graphic) or other image which you have the legal right to use and is NOT a picture of yourself is a good idea. In addition, as Dawn mentioned, discussions here should relate to digital storytelling and our project. There are LOTS of other social networks out there, and we don't want to discourage/chill conversations here-- but we do want to make sure nothing posted or shared here gets anyone in hot water or is inappropriate.

If you do see something inappropriate on our site, please directly message one of our current site administrators. This group now includes Dawn Danker, Kamala Jolly-Stewart, Eric Hileman, Dana Owens DeLong, and myself.

Teachers, please be sure to review these guidelines with your students as you introduce them to our learning community. This is a GREAT opportunity for us all to contextually learn about safe online social networking. There is great power and potential in our learning community, and together I know we can be safe as well as provide a good example of how digital social networking can be used constructively and legally to support learning inside and outside of schools. :-)
